Yowza.
This is some read. A genuinely amazing insight into digital music over the last 12 months.
Alot to get out of it, where I will simply include some stats here to whet your appetite.
Turns out 9 out of 10 of the most liked people on Facebook are artists, with 7 of the top 10 most followed people on Twitter artists as well (with Justin Bieber being more popular than U.S. President Barack Obama..) Also, 9 out of 10 of the most popular YouTube videos are music-based.
In a nutshell? Music is EVERWHERE online.
IFPI also report some success stories in social media, report on emerging marketplaces such as Brazil and generally paint a positive picture of digital music.
Continuing the main proposal from the 2012 report, IFPI calls for greater support from intermediaries showing, for example, that no less than 70% of links on the first page of Google for artists with 'mp3' in the search terms, spawned links to illegal sources of downloads (Top 5 artists from Feb 2012 Top 100 artists on Billboard).
Still work to be done then (where IFPI estimates 32% of all Internet users regularly accessing music illegally).
Esssential reading.
